Univision Highlights Early Literacy Goals of “Pequeños y Valiosos” (Young and Valuable) and Too Small to Fail at Austin's "Feria Para Aprender" (The Learning Fair)

Local Univision Personalities to Distribute and Read Books from Reading Garden

Austin, TX—Tomorrow, Univision Communications Inc. will hold an education fair in Austin, Texas in order to distribute several thousand books to local children and families. The event is part of the recently launched “Pequeños y Valiosos” (Young and Valuable), a partnership between Univision and Too Small to Fail, a joint initiative of Next Generation and the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. Approximately 10,000 people are expected to attend the event tomorrow.

Local Univision celebrities will make special appearances during the fair, and will read to babies and young children at the “Pequeños y Valiosos” Reading Garden.  Additionally, other partners including First Book, AVANCE Austin, Sesame Workshop and Zero to Three will contribute additional informational materials and products for distribution at the event. First Book, a nonprofit, has provided 5,000 books for distribution at the fair.

Through its partnership with Univision, and its award-winning education initiative, Too Small to Fail aims to share information and tips with Hispanic parents and caregivers about how they can help prepare their young children for success in school.

The "Feria Para Aprender" is taking place on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Highland Mall. It is the largest Spanish-language education fair in Central Texas. Since launching in 2007, “Feria Para Aprender” has served over 200,000 parents and students nationwide. Every year, this flagship experience continues to reach thousands of families who are drawn by the unique Spanish-language format and the opportunity to connect with hundreds of programs and resources that support academic success from cradle to career.

About Too Small to Fail

Too Small to Fail, a joint initiative of the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Next Generation, aims to help parents, communities and businesses take meaningful actions to improve the health and well-being of children ages zero to five, so that more of America’s children are prepared to succeed in the 21st century. 

In 2014, Too Small to Fail will focus its work on closing the “word gap.” Studies have found that by age three, children in upper class families hear approximately 30 million more words than children in low-income families. This disparity in hearing words from parents and caregivers translates directly into a disparity in learning words. And that puts our children born with the fewest advantages even further behind. Among those born in 2001, only 48 percent of poor children started school ready to learn, compared to 75 percent of children from middle-income families.

The “word gap” is a significant but solvable challenge. Too Small to Fail is about parents, caregivers, other concerned individuals, and the private sector coming together to take small, research-based actions with big impacts.
