Dreamforce Attendees Will Assemble Thousands of Tote Bags Filled With Books, Tips and Clothing for Oakland Parents and Caregivers

San Francisco, Calif. – Dreamforce 2014—Following her keynote address at Dreamforce 2014 tomorrow, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will join Salesforce Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff, Bay Area business and community leaders, and Dreamforce volunteers to kick off a day-long effort to fill thousands of tote bags with materials designed to encourage Oakland parents and caregivers to talk, read and sing to their children from birth.
The tote bags are part of “Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing”, a community-wide campaign that aims to close the word gap by highlighting for parents and caregivers how simple actions done every day from birth—like describing objects seen during a bus ride, singing songs, reading aloud or telling stories—can significantly improve a baby’s vocabulary and boost their brain development. The “word gap” refers to the difference of about 30 million words that children in low-income families hear by age four, compared to their high-income peers. The fewer words children hear, the fewer they learn, and the more likely they are to experience an achievement gap, which persists through the school years and has a life-long impact on health and well-being. Research has shown that parents and caregivers can help close the word gap by increasing the number of words they speak to their children from birth every day.
During the three-year Talking is Teaching campaign, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland and other local partners will distribute to parents thousands of tote bags filled with clothing bearing campaign messages; a toolkit by Sesame Street; books from Scholastic; and information about how to sign up for Text4baby, a free mobile health service for pregnant women and new mothers.
The Talking is Teaching campaign in Oakland is a partnership between Too Small to Fail and the Bay Area Council, and the creative clothing and media materials were designed with Goodby Silverstein & Partners. The campaign is supported with a generous gift from Marc and Lynne Benioff, as well as the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and John and Lisa Pritzker.
